Growing notes

Light

Bright indirect light; keep it out of direct sun, which scorches the leaves. Variegated forms need more light than plain green ones.

Soil

Peat-free, loam-based potting compost rich in organic matter, moist but well drained; never leave the pot standing in water.

Care

Water thoroughly, then let the top quarter to third of the compost dry before watering again; in winter keep it just moist. It likes high humidity – use a humidifier or a tray of wet pebbles – and warmth of 16–29 °C. Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly in spring and summer. Give a sturdy support such as a moss pole so the stems do not break, wipe dust off the leaves and prune or repot in spring when needed. The sap irritates skin and eyes, and the plant is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten.
